How many students currently receive Backpack food?
In the 2024-25 school year, 75 students received weekend Backpack food.
Where does the Backpack food come from?
The food comes from Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, which includes Alamance County.
What is the cost per student for weekend meals during the school year?
The cost to feed one child each school year is about $200.
How does the program work?
The food is purchased from Second Harvest Food Bank and delivered to Newlin on Thursdays during the school year. The school social worker identifies eligible students. On Friday, teachers place the food bags in the backpacks of students who
qualify. This is done when students are out of the classroom so there is privacy concerning who receives the food each week.
Who supports the program?
The program is supported by two churches: Holy Comforter Episcopal and First Wesleyan Church of Burlington. Both churches are in the Newlin neighborhood.
Who oversees the program?
The Newlin Backpack Food Coordinator is Margaret Egede-Nissen. Stig Egede-Nissen delivers the food from Holy Comforter to Newlin each week during the school year. The Newlin school social worker oversees the details at Newlin.
Where do the funds for the program come from?
First Wesleyan Church supports 15 students. Holy Comforter supports the remaining 60. Funds come from donors, both individuals and businesses, fundraisers, and grants.
How long has the Backpack Food Program existed?
Started in 2013 with a pilot project for 10 students, the program has grown to support 75 students.
Are there still students who lack food on the weekends?
Sadly, yes. About 95% of Newlin students qualify for breakfast and lunch on weekdays as defined by income level.
