Lucky Listeners
Newlin Literacy Project
Newlin Literacy Project
Lucky Listeners provide “ears,” guidance, and encouragement to young readers who are just beginning to build their reading skills. More reading practice leads to more fluent reading, and the caregivers of many of our children at Newlin are not always able to give their child extra reading practice at home. Lucky Listeners volunteer their time to come to Newlin Elementary School to listen to early readers read aloud, giving them help where needed and positive feedback in a supportive environment.
The Lucky Listeners program was begun in 2012, with students in grades one through four, but had to take a break during the pandemic. The program was re-launched in 2024 with nine Listeners and the support and encouragement of the school and staff. We welcome volunteers from the community at large, and from all walks of life. We are glad to have diverse community involvement.
