The Newlin Literacy Project (originally the Burlington chapter of the Augustine Literacy Project; see our history here) is comprised of two programs that contribute to our Mission. A Tutoring program provides one-to-one tutoring in reading skills for struggling first grade readers, and a Lucky Listeners program gives second graders the opportunity for greater practice reading aloud. We know that Newlin Literacy Project Tutors make a difference: In-depth data analysis shows that students who were tutored by NLP Tutors improved their annual reading scores by a statistically greater amount than a control group of students who did not receive NLP tutoring. In addition, this improvement increased with the amount of time the Tutors spent with their students. Details of the analyses can be seen here.
Both Tutors and Lucky Listeners receive all necessary training before joining the programs—we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and all walks of life!
