What are tutor training requirements? Tutors receive significant training in teaching methods based in the Science of Reading, designed to improve reading, writing, and spelling abilities. These methods are structured, multi-sensory, individualized, and phonics-based, and follow the research-based Orton-Gillingham approach. Coaching by and shadowing experienced Tutors are also a part of the training. Training is provided at no cost to the tutors.
When is the next training class? The four-to-five day training is usually held in mid-September. Exact days and times will depend on participants’ schedules. The application deadline for this training is usually mid-August.
Where does the training take place? Training takes place at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter (www.hc-b.org ) at 320 East Davis St., Burlington NC. Shadowing experienced Tutors takes place at Newlin Elementary School ( www.abss.k12.nc.us/hne ), 316 Carden St., Burlington, NC 27215.
Are additional meetings required after training? Tutors attend regularly scheduled Continuing Education meetings and luncheons at no cost, approximately once a month. As Tutors prepare more advanced material for students, they are required to attend a mini-training session.
What commitment is expected of the Tutor? After successful completion of training, the Tutor signs an agreement to tutor twice a week for 40 minutes. The Tutor should complete one full school year, with a Newlin Elementary student, with the opportunity to continue to volunteer beyond this minimum commitment.
Who pays for training, materials, etc.? Fundraising, individual donors, Newlin Elementary School, and the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter underwrite the cost of training.
How much time does it take to prepare a lesson? Lesson planning for new Tutors often takes less than an hour. This process becomes more streamlined with experience.
Is it important to have prior teaching experience? No. Experienced teachers and people with other educational backgrounds all have the opportunity to learn the methodology and practice the skills necessary for being a Tutor. We welcome people with different work experiences, all of whom bring their own wealth of life experience to the students.
Are Tutors required to pass a Background Check in order to tutor as an Newlin Literacy Project tutor at Newlin? Yes. Documentation of successfully passing a Background Check and an online training program regarding best practices for working with children is required before tutoring can begin.
How will the child I tutor be selected? Teachers work with the Newlin Elementary Literacy Coach to recommend first grade students they believe would benefit from one-on-one reading instruction. Parents give their approval for their child to be tutored. A Newlin Literacy Project representative and the Literacy Coach pair students with Tutors.
